Zambia : Kasempa Admin Worries Over Increased Teen Pregnancies

Kasempa District Administration has raised concern over teenage pregnancies and limited access to reproductive health information among adolescents, prompting it to call on traditional leaders to take an active role in addressing the challenges.

District Administrative Officer Francis Makanga said traditional leaders were important partners in addressing sexual and reproductive health challenges, including teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and limited access to information.

Mr Makanga said this during a traditional leaders’ engagement meeting on integrated sexual and reproductive health services in Kasempa District, North-western Province.

“As a district, we remain concerned about challenges such as teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and limited access to reproductive health information among some members of our communities,” he added.

Mr Makanga said sexual and reproductive health was a human right and key to sustainable development, enabling individuals and communities to make informed life decisions.

He explained that integrated sexual and reproductive health services combined family planning, maternal and child health, HIV and STI prevention, adolescent health and gender-based violence response.

“This integrated approach ensures that people receive comprehensive care in a convenient, effective and cost-efficient manner,” he said.

Mr Makanga called for a supportive environment where adolescents can access age-appropriate information and services without facing unnecessary barriers.

“I therefore call upon parents, teachers, traditional leaders and departmental heads to work together in providing accurate information and guidance to young people,” he said.

Mr Makanga said the government remains committed to strengthening the health system and improving access to reproductive health services.

However, he said these efforts required active participation from communities and stakeholders to succeed.

Mr Makanga commended traditional and religious leaders, government departments, the media and partners, particularly Marie Stopes, for supporting efforts to improve health and wellbeing in Kasempa.

He said continued collaboration among stakeholders would help strengthen access to sexual and reproductive health information and services, while contributing to healthier families and communities.
