Zambia : Stakeholders Call For Monitoring Of Mining Activities

North-western Province Council of Elders Secretary Kenneth Kapata has called for closer monitoring of mining activities and spillages into rivers and streams.

Speaking during the recently held North-Western Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) meeting, Mr Kapata stated that concerns raised by community members on the pollution from mining operations in areas such as Dengwe, Lufupa and lLungwa should be considered, adding that pollution in streams can kill fish and contaminate water sources used by local communities.

He added that the Zambia Environmental Management Authority ZEMA and other relevant authorities should assess the impact of mining spillages on small streams and ensure measures are taken to protect the environment and communities.

Mr Kapata recommended that regular monitoring of mining activities will help in the planning of emergencies.

He added that water in mining areas should be tested and assessed for its safety.

The Council of Elders Chairperson emphasised that ground water should also be assessed for contamination to safeguard the health of the people.

“We appeal to authorities to look into the concerns of the people in mining areas and monitor activities to ensure that our streams are not contaminated,” he said.

Meanwhile the Zambia Environmental Management Authority in the province says it is not aware of any spillages but says the authority will visit the areas for an informed report.
