Zambia : Ruto Tells Zambians: Elections Decide Who Governs, Not Who Belongs

Kenyan President William Ruto has called on Zambians to close ranks after a hard-fought general election, telling thousands gathered at National Heroes Stadium that political rivalry must never be allowed to fracture the nation’s shared destiny. Speaking at President Hakainde Hichilema‘s inauguration for a second term on Tuesday, the Kenyan leader described the President’s re-election as a resounding vote of confidence from Zambians in the direction the country has taken over the past five years.

Ruto used his address to draw a sharp line between the contest of an election and the bonds that must survive it. “Elections are designed to settle who governs,” he told the crowd, in remarks that drew loud applause from the red-clad supporters filling the stadium. “They should never determine who belongs.”

The Kenyan leader framed the ballot as a contest of ideas rather than a battle between enemies. He said political rivals ought to disagree fiercely without destroying the fabric that binds a nation together, and that genuine competition should never tip into hostility that excludes those on the losing side.

For Ruto, the real test of a functioning democracy is not the moment citizens agree, but the moment they hold sharply different views and still find a way to govern together. He said Zambia‘s “One Zambia, One Nation” motto captures a principle that stretches far beyond national identity, standing as a reminder that difference need not become division.

The Kenyan leader also reflected on the economic terrain President Hichilema inherited at the start of his first term, as well as the drought that later battered the country’s agricultural output. He praised the manner in which the Zambian leader had navigated those pressures, describing his approach as one of statesmanship rather than short-term popularity-chasing.

Turning to the continent’s wider prospects, Ruto challenged African leaders to convert the region’s arable land, mineral wealth, energy resources and youthful population into tangible prosperity. He argued that the current generation of leadership will ultimately be judged on whether it can turn natural endowment into shared opportunity for ordinary citizens.

Sovereignty, he said, must translate into self-reliance, and democracy into meaningful opportunity for the people it is meant to serve, rather than remaining an abstract ideal detached from daily life. He reaffirmed Kenya‘s commitment to deepening cooperation with Zambia through the new term, building on ties that stretch across trade, regional security and diplomatic coordination.

His remarks came as part of a broader wave of continental goodwill directed at Zambia during the ceremony. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa pledged to strengthen cooperation between Harare and Lusaka, crediting Zambians with placing renewed trust in Hichilema‘s leadership. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan wrote in a social media post that Dar es Salaam would continue valuing and strengthening historic ties between the two nations.

African Union Commission chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, speaking through his representative, commended Zambia for maintaining a trajectory of peaceful elections. He pledged continued collaboration with the incoming administration on regional integration priorities.

The gathering brought together an unusually broad cross-section of African leadership. Among them were Botswana‘s Duma Boko, Namibia‘s Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Lesotho‘s Sam Matekane and Eswatini‘s Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, alongside envoys representing China and other international partners.

For President Hichilema, the show of continental solidarity landed alongside a domestic message built around reconciliation. In his own address, the Head of State extended what he called an olive branch to those who had voted against him, insisting that the country belonged equally to all Zambians regardless of how they had cast their ballots.

The dual message, of continental partnership from visiting leaders and internal unity from the President himself, set the tone for a second term that both Lusaka and its regional allies have framed as a moment to convert political stability into economic momentum. Attention now turns to how quickly that rhetoric translates into the practical business of governing a country still working through pressures around cost of living, employment and energy security.
