Lusaka - Zambia: National Marketers and Traders Association(ZANAMACA) is calling on President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to place the informal sector

National Marketers and Traders Association(ZANAMACA) is calling on President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to place the informal sector at the centre of Zambia’s economic transformation during his second term.

Association President Mupila Kameya said the millions of marketeers, traders, small-scale farmers, bus drivers and taxi operators who sustain livelihoods and facilitate the movement of goods and people deserve greater legal protection, access to finance and meaningful participation in policy-making.

In an exclusive Interview with the media today, Mr Kameya said the government should, as a matter of urgency, fully implement the Markets and Bus Stations Act by establishing and operationalising legal Market and Bus Station Boards across the country.

He said this will help eliminate illegal cadreism, promote transparency in revenue collection and ensure that funds collected from markets are channeled towards improving sanitation, security and infrastructure.

Mr Kameya is further calling for an amendment to the Constituency Development Fund guidelines to ring-fence 2.5 percent of CDF specifically for marketeers, traders and small-scale farmers.

He said such a measure would enable informal economy operators to access affordable micro-capital, equipment and agricultural inputs directly within their communities, without being hindered by bureaucratic processes.

And Mr Kameya has called for deeper collaboration between Government and organisations representing informal sector operators.

He said a structured platform for continuous dialogue and joint decision-making would ensure that policies, urban planning and trade regulations reflect the realities of people operating in markets, farms and bus stations.

Mr Kameya said the informal economy should not be viewed as a burden to be managed, but as an engine of wealth creation capable of contributing significantly to Zambia’s economic development.

He said the success of President Hichilema’s second term should ultimately be measured by whether economic transformation is felt by ordinary Zambians working in markets, farms and bus stations across the country.
