Zambia : Education Sector Reacts To President Hichilema’s Inauguration Speech

The National Union of Public and Private Educators of Zambia (NUPPEZ) has welcomed Government’s move to increase investment in education by employing more teachers, constructing additional classrooms and improving teachers’ welfare.

Speaking on the President Hakainde Hichilema’s second-term priorities, NUPPEZ Executive President Charity Kampamba says continued investment in education is essential to producing a skilled population and accelerating national development.

Dr Kampamba stated that the call follows the increase in school enrolment resulting from the introduction of free education, which has placed pressure on existing infrastructure and teaching staff.

She said some classrooms now accommodate between 80 and 90 learners, making it difficult for teachers to effectively manage classes and deliver quality education.

She has called for improved conditions for teachers, particularly those serving in rural areas, saying a motivated workforce is critical to improving the quality of education.

Dr Kampamba further called on the government to ensure that learners have adequate teaching and learning materials, including individual reading materials, instead of sharing books among several pupils.

She commended the UPND administration for its first-term interventions in the education sector, including free education, the recruitment of 30,000 teachers and the expansion of the school feeding programme, adding that the programmes have contributed to increased school enrolment, improved learner retention and greater access to education.

She however, appealed to other stakeholders to complement government efforts in areas such as school construction and the provision of learning materials.

Dr Kampamba has since urged the government to sustain its free education and school feeding programmes while increasing funding towards the construction of classrooms and recruitment of teachers.

Meanwhile, Bridgemark High Schools director Benson Musonda said increased investment will help decongest schools and improve access to quality education, especially in underserved communities.

Mr Musonda congratulated President Hichilema on his re-election and said the sector was encouraged by the renewed focus on education.

He said there is now optimism that the government will scale up infrastructure development, to meet the growing demand for education, following the introduction of free education from Grade One through secondary school.

Mr Musonda has since called for sustained investment in classrooms and other school infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, to ensure learners have access to a conducive learning environment.
