Zambia : Zambia Reaffirms Commitment To Cancer Treatment

 Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cancer treatment and oncology services in the region.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary (PS) Kennedy Lishimpi

says this commitment is demonstrated through investments in specialised cancer treatment infrastructure, equipment and technology.

Dr Lishimpi disclosed this in Lusaka today when he opened a two-day oncology symposium which being held at Inter-continental.

The PS stressed that the ongoing efforts include the recent commissioning of an upgraded radiotherapy and imaging section equipped with modern technology by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Dr Lishimpi stressed that government is also decentralising cancer services, with the Ndola Cancer Treatment Centre nearing 85 percent completion, while construction of a similar facility in Livingstone is expected to be on board soon.

He called for greater collaboration among oncology experts and partners to improve the quality and safety of cancer treatment.

He explained that the objective is to establish a stronger and more coordinated cancer-care system that enables patients to access appropriate services as close to their communities as possible, while specialised centres provide advanced and complex treatment.

He also called for increased focus on cancer prevention and early detection, saying early diagnosis improves the chances of timely intervention and better treatment outcomes.

The PS challenged the participants to use the three-day meeting starting today up to September 5th, 2026 to go beyond information sharing and identify practical measures that can be implemented in their respective institutions.

Meanwhile, Chief Scientific Officer at University of Texas Albert Koong, disclosed that his institution has collaborated with the Cancer Disease Hospital (CDH) for more than 15 years alongside providing capacity building, technical and equipment support to Zambia.

Dr Koong stated in an interview that the partnership has culminated in the opening of a modern radiotherapy centre at CDH, University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka.

He explained that the partnership with government through the Ministry of Health has the potential to transform the radiotherapy centre at CDH into a world class regional cancer treatment and training centres in Africa.
