CHINESE President Xi Jinping has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for his call for national unity and his vision of “One Zambia, One Nation.”

Speaking at Community House on Wednesday, Xi’s Special Envoy and Vice Chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Xian Hui, congratulated Hichilema on his election victory.

“President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message and appointed me as the Special Envoy to attend the inauguration ceremony here in Zambia,” Xian said.

“China and Zambia enjoy friendship. We are good friends and good partners. Yesterday, we attended your inauguration ceremony, and your speech was good,” she said.

Xian also commended Zambia for its support for international development and efforts to improve people’s livelihoods. She said China welcomes the revitalization of the Tanzania–Zambia Railway, TAZARA, as testimony to the two countries’ long-standing friendship.

Hichilema said Zambia and China will continue to collaborate on mining, TAZARA and other infrastructure projects, noting potential for further cooperation.

“Your visit also reaffirms the strong relationship between China and Zambia,” Hichilema said. “President Xi Jinping and President Kaunda established important foundations for this relationship, and we, as leaders today, are following in the footsteps of those who came before us.”

The President said China, working in partnership with Zambia, can help expand not only the railway line but also businesses and economic opportunities along the corridor and across the country.

Hichilema added that during a visit to China last year, his delegation explored opportunities in provinces including Fujian, particularly in mining.

“China is an important partner to Zambia, and we are committed to doing more together,” he said.
