Stakeholders in the agricultural sector have welcomed President Hakainde Hichilema’s call to scale up production and diversify the agricultural sector through increased investment in technology, science and infrastructure.

The stakeholders say the President’s call provides an opportunity for the country to move beyond stability towards sustainable growth and increased agricultural productivity.

And reacting to the President’s inaugural address, the Agricultural Institute of Zambia Chief Executive Officer Mathews Ngosa has called on stakeholders to work together to achieve the country’s production targets for maize, soya beans, wheat, sugar and beef.

Mr Ngosa noted that the targets set for the commodities are ambitious but achievable with proper planning, good investment and implementation.

He, however, noted that there is a need to address issues of climate change through the promotion of climate smart agriculture, water conservation, soil health and sustainable land management as they are important for the protection of agricultural production for future generations.

He has since called all players in the Agricultural sector to take the pronouncements seriously and take action to yield measurable results.

And the National Association for Small scale Farmers (NASFA) Executive Director says the nation’s economic growth is tied to the Agricultural Sector.

He stressed that out of the eight national focus points, five of them were agricultural related which he said translated that over 50 percent of the National development focus will be on Agriculture.

He said his organisation will continue to work with the government to ensure that all the set goals and the reaching of 10 million metric tonnes of maize production by the year 2031 is achieved.

He since commended the government for responding quickly whenever matters affecting farmers arise calling it a good sign of things yet to come.
