Menstrual periods are a normal part of the reproductive cycle, but for many women and girls, the days leading up to and during menstruation can come with abdominal cramps, back pain, headaches, tiredness, bloating, mood changes and breast tenderness.

Period pain, medically known as dysmenorrhea, is commonly caused by contractions of the uterus as it sheds its lining. While mild to moderate discomfort can often be managed at home, severe or unusual pain should not simply be considered a normal part of having periods.

One of the simplest ways to ease menstrual cramps is applying heat. A warm water bottle, heating pad or warm bath can help relax muscles and reduce discomfort. Gentle movement can also help, so women who feel able to do so can try walking, stretching, yoga or other light physical activity.

Rest is equally important. During menstruation, it is perfectly reasonable to slow down when the body feels tired. Getting enough sleep, staying hydrated and eating regular, nutritious meals can help women feel better during their periods. Foods containing iron, such as beans, leafy green vegetables, meat and fortified cereals, can also be useful as women lose blood during menstruation.

Over-the-counter pain medicines such as ibuprofen or naproxen can help reduce menstrual cramps for many people when taken according to the package directions. Paracetamol may also help with pain. Women with medical conditions, allergies, stomach problems, kidney problems, or those taking other medicines should check with a healthcare professional or pharmacist before using painkillers.

Good menstrual hygiene is also important. Sanitary pads, tampons or menstrual cups should be changed or used according to their instructions to reduce the risk of irritation and infection. Washing the external genital area with water and keeping the area clean is generally sufficient; harsh or heavily fragranced products can cause irritation.

It can also be helpful to understand your own menstrual cycle. Tracking the first day of each period, how long bleeding lasts, pain levels and other symptoms can help identify patterns and make it easier to prepare for the next period. Keeping sanitary products and any regularly used pain-relief medicine available before the expected period can also prevent unnecessary stress.

Women should seek medical attention if period pain is severe, suddenly becomes much worse, interferes significantly with school, work or normal activities, or does not improve with usual measures. Medical evaluation is also important when periods become unusually heavy or irregular, bleeding occurs between periods, pain occurs outside menstruation, or there are symptoms such as fainting, fever or unusual vaginal discharge.

Very heavy bleeding can require urgent attention, particularly when a woman is soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several consecutive hours, especially if this is accompanied by dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath or fainting.

Most importantly, women should not feel embarrassed about discussing menstruation. Periods are a normal biological process, and persistent or severe symptoms deserve proper attention rather than being dismissed as something every woman simply has to endure.
